Google has announced it is rolling out a new search ranking algorithm update that targets the spam side of search results. This is called the ‘November 2021 Spam Update.’. The update is said to take around one week to roll out and be noticeable within the search results.

“As part of our regular work to improve results, we’ve released a spam update to our systems. This November 2021, spam update should be fully rolled out within a week. We encourage sites to follow our best practices for Search.” – Google.

How can this affect your online business?

You may notice changes in terms of traffic and ranking, which from an SEO perspective can be quite frustrating. This may mean you’ve been hit by the spam update. The spam update is targeting guideline violations that haven’t been specifically outlined. This means we are unsure whether it’s links, content, or other areas that are causing problems. Danny Sullivan, from Google, has however commented that spam updates like this one are targeted at content that doesn’t meet their specific guidelines.

What do I do if I’m hit by the update?

We advise running an SEO audit to identify any spam issues that are present on your website that you may not have been aware of. It’s important to keep an eye on your figures at this time so that you can implement any changes that are necessary to ensure you are meeting the guidelines and your Google ranking isn’t impacted too much. We also recommend you follow the best practices for Search within Google and ensure you are up to date on what these are.
