Google Maps’ New Search Results Make Photos Significantly More Important

Google has introduced a new Google Maps search results interface that spotlights the importance of photos associated with Google Business Profile listings. Termed a “photo-first” search result listing interface, this new feature has been rolled out in France, Germany, Japan, the U.K., and the U.S., so if you have come across it, don’t be surprised.

Wondering what it looks like?

In this revamped interface, search results in Google Maps now prominently display photos at the top of the listing, prioritising images over other details like the company name, star reviews, address, phone number, and additional information.

Google recognised that for some local searches, users are primarily interested in seeing photos of food, attractions, venues, and more. This shift to a photo-first approach aims to provide users with better-organised search results that stimulate their imagination.

Google plans to expand this approach with thematic results for activities and dining on Android and iOS globally in the coming weeks.

Wondering how Google selects the photos?

Google employs artificial intelligence (AI) to curate these photos, with algorithms determining the most relevant images. These selections are based on the analysis of millions of photos shared by the Google Maps community, using advanced image recognition models and AI technology.

If you are a local business, it’s crucial to pay attention to the photos that appear in your local maps listings. You can upload your own photos through Google Business Profiles and encourage satisfied customers to upload positive images when they review your business on Google Maps and Local. This not only enhances your online presence but also ensures that potential customers get an appealing visual representation of your offerings.
