Following on from our collaboration webinar with Shopify, Making Your Platform work for You, we’ve taken onboard your feedback and curated an FAQ to help answer any important questions you might have when considering a re-platform.

Although we concentrated on how Shopify can help enable growth and autonomy compared to competitor Visualsoft, the feedback we received covers areas that should be considered no matter which platform you’d think of migrating from. Merchants are at the heart of any platform or agency, so we’ve considered the most important factors when looking to re-platform as we understand it’s one of the most daunting processes that affects any website.

Cost

The most common question asked my any merchant is, ‘how much will it cost?’, ultimately price being at the heart of most business decisions. It’s important to understand that there is no blanket cost to migrate, and that resonates across all platforms and agencies alike. Where the cost changes depends on the complexity of your website; the more complex, the more time it takes, and consequently more of a cost.

Time

Much like the cost of a migration, the time it takes to re-platform is dependent on the complexity of the website. If there is complex functionality, lots of data, and potential UI / UX changes to be made to optimise the launch, more time will need to be spent planning on bringing the elements across and ensuring that the site seamlessly transitions onto the new platform. Nonetheless, with the right planning and execution, a successful migration can be achieved in about four months.

Planning

The key to a successful and well executed migration lies in the planning stage. Doing a thorough discovery audit of the site, mapping out all key functionality and any SEO considerations is the starting block so that all parties understand the full extend of the migration. Road mapping these elements out before the development is as important as seeing if anything can be optimized before launch, ensuring your website is making the best of the platform.

Pitfalls

Understanding where things can go wrong before and after launch is as important as the planning stage of the re-platform. Making sure that that all of the data is moved across correctly and all redirects are updated are often overlooked in favour of making sure the look and feel of the website is the same on the new platform. Is your website backed up? Are you prepared for downtime? Looking at the problems before the migration will prepare you for success when it’s launched.

Security

We are commonly asked how secure the process is when migrating to a new platform. The truth is that nothing is 100% guaranteed, but there are many safety nets in place depending on what platform you’re moving to. Ensuring your website is backed up is the main priority, that includes all data as well as the site build. If the migration is planned effectively, the security of your website should be included in this process.

Next Steps

Once you’ve reviewed your options and done all of the neccessary planning and decided where you’re moving to, it’s time to start the process of re-platforming. Whether this is done in house or with an agency, it’s important to plan, plan, plan and start with a thorough audit of your website.
